"Fuel drums and jerry cans were widely used during WWII for transporting fuel and water supplies to the front lines, and they could be loaded on tanks and vehicles to provide fuel on the battlefield. While the allies initially adopted "Blitz Cans" copied from the German 20 liter portable fuel can, the U.S. forces later developed their own type of "jerry can". German fuel drums were equipped with a filler cap on the side and a protective band to allow them to be rolled on the ground. This set includes a variety of jerry cans and drum cans used by Allied and German forces during WWII. Employing these familiar accessories will further enhance the atmosphere of tanks, vehicles and dioramas. Allied fuel cans were painted olive drab, while German cans were painted German grey, field grey of dark yellow. The Germans also drew a white cross on water cans to distinguish them from fuel cans."
- well that's what it says on the instructions! - © Tamiya 2005.
The set contains two identical sprues, each of which has both Allied and German components arranged on either side of the main injection point. This makes it easy to separate the 'X' and 'Y' sections should you want to share or only need the accessories for one type. In total there are 6 drums, 8 cans and around 10 sacks / rolls / pouches for each force which to the untrained eye are historically correct. The U.S. drums for example have 'USA QMC' embossed on the lids and letters stamped into the cans. The pieces are superbly detailed with lettering 0.5mm high is legible, even without painting to lift the contrast. The various pouches, tarpaulin rolls and bags can be used in an infinite number of ways, piled up as per the box illustration or attached to other vehicle models. There is a photograph on the side of the box showing them arranged across the back of two tanks and hung around the turret. (unfortunately, I couldn't get a decent scan of this picture).
Now I must confess, I bought this kit on an impulse. I happened to wander past it at a model show and opened it to see what 1/48th scale actually was. I am not a military model fan, but these will go nicely with the 28mm futuristic stuff that I do like. I personally think the scale fits much better than most of the other drums & cans that are supposedly for the 28mm battlefield. The drums for example are waist high to a 28mm figure, rather than being as tall as one! This is one of the advantages of finding a site such as TotalModel, it encourages lateral thinking and a cross genre broadening of opportunity.
The downside is that based on the quality of this kit I am sorely tempted to go and buy a Tamiya vehicle, I'd not really considered military models to be my 'thing' but there's always the possibility
Positive: Superb detail and excellent fit of components.
Negative: Very small pieces can be difficult to hold while assembling.
Value: Good, but shop around. I later found this kit considerably cheaper than I paid for it 'on impulse'.
