Over the last couple of years, almost unnoticed, Chiltern Miniatures have been assembling a very attractive line-up of 28mm figures. The items for this review are from their "Character" range which already includes several other Gods from the Greek pantheon.
The 4 figures are cast in white metal. The first thing you notice about them is their size. They are far bigger than "standard" 28mm figs. Perhaps this has something to do with their "Godly" stature or more simply that Chiltern prefer to build their miniatures along more substantial lines. Either way each figure packs a lot of metal and looks very impressive.
As you might expect with figures of this type, there are lots of muscular torsos on show! Bulging biceps and six-packs are the order of the day. Rendering an accurate physique is an important litmus test for any sculptor. Too much muscle and your character looks ridiculous, too little and he looks weedy. I'm pleased to say that Chiltern have passed this test with flying colours. Both Poseidon and Hercules - in particular - have bodies that even Charles Atlas would be proud of! Indeed almost all of the modelling is excellent. The weapons, clothing and items of kit are all very convincing. The only caveat is that some of the characters appear to have very flat noses!
If you're looking for a four-pack of mighty heroes, then these figures are for you. The quality of the sculpture together with their size makes them perfect subjects for a painting project.
