If you're in search of some special 54mm figure, the world is indeed your oyster. There are loads of companies littered around the globe ready to furnish you with pretty much any kind of character you need. One of them is Firestorm. David Hay's company has been around for a while now and I was determined to take a closer look at what he's got. I duly paid a quick visit to the Firestorm website and ordered this pack of figures - for which I was able to pay via the Paypal facility.
Firestorm are based Australia so I didn't hold out too much hope of seeing the figures any time soon. To my great surprise, however, a few days later they dropped through my letter box.
The kit contains two German figures - presumably on sentry duty - dressed in winter clothing. Each figure is composed of a body, two arms a head and two feet - which are all that can be seen protruding from beneath their greatcoats. There is a small selection of German infantry kit, including the a-typical gas mask case, canteen and bread bag. A small wood burning brazier is also supplied to complete the scene.
I was immediately impressed by the quality of the components. The sculpting is nothing short of excellent. This is true not only of the fine details but also the way in which the modeller has captured the character of the figures. I like the way the heavy folds of the greatcoats seem to hang just right. The turned-up collar and lapels also appear to flop rather convincingly. Even the bread bag seems affected by the force of gravity. These are all minor observations but they certainly add to the overall quality of the figures.
Even the most expertly rendered models don't always survive intact through the casting process. Thankfully, that's not the case here. Each component was remarkably clean with no evidence of moulding artifacts or air bubbles to seen anywhere. Once removed from their resin carriers, the pieces can be assembled very quickly. The result is a pair of very convincing figures that will definitely add a special touch to your winter diorama.
Highly recommended.
