In Wargaming parlance, 15mm is small and 10mm is tiny. If that's the case these 6mm figures from Baccus must surely rank as micro minis! The reason for crafting miniatures at such a small scale is so they can be deployed in games like DBA and DBM. These wargames allow players to field huge armies of massed ranks which stretch as far as the battlefield is wide. If larger minis were employed, these epic confrontations would require a battlefield the size of a small aircraft carrier. Players would also need to be equipped with arms like Orangutans in order to reach and move their figures.
The Polish Hussars are just one of a number of packs in a much larger line-up of Great North War miniatures. This, in turn, represents just one of the ranges available in the enormous catalogue of miniatures created by Baccus. These particular figures are molded in gropus of three on one long base. The base can be snapped at various points along its length to separate the miniatures into individual elements. Typically, these would then be glued to some form of generic wargaming base in much the same way as other figures of this type.
When dealing with such miniscule miniatures, it should be easy to write them off as insignificant blobs of metal - but not so. Peter Berry, the man behind Baccus, has ensured each one of his creations retains bags of character. Despite the fact that these figures are only marginally taller than a pea, there is plenty of detail in evidence. Each horse, for example, is wearing a head collar, bridle and other tack - all of which is clearly defined. The riders are equally well turned out, sporting tunics, helmets and their magnificent decorative wings. This attention to detail not only ensures each miniature is good to look at - but also easy to paint. This is a very important consideration, particularly if your army is a little on the large size!
I must admit to being very impressed with these minis. Although I would hardly call myself a seasoned wargamer, my eye is drawn to quality just like everyone else. In this respect, I believe Peter Berry has done a cracking job and look forward to seeing many more examples of his work.
