The Space Wolf Terminator conversion set from ForgeWorld provides cast resin pieces to make 5 complete chapter specific models when combined with the new plastic Terminators set. The conversion set consists of torsos and shoulder pads only, all other components coming from the regular plastic Terminator sprues. Obviously, the miniatures can be assembled in an almost unlimited combinations and poses, as per the compete plastic set covered by Antar in another review. So, on to the resin components themselves.
Firstly, the torsos, 2 of which include superbly detailed heads. Now I'm not exaggerating when I say the resolution of sculpting is phenomenal on these. An open mouth with visible canine teeth, anatomically correct ears and furrowed foreheads complete with eyebrows. The necklaces of teeth and skulls adorning the chest plates are unmistakable Space Wolf icons. The remaining 3 torsos are plain by comparison, having just the chest plates to associate them with the Space Wolf chapter, and two of these are identical. All three of these accept the plastic heads from the 'donor' set.
The Left shoulder pads are yet more testament to the skill of the sculptor, each one being significantly different from the others. Each has the main wolf's head icon, but differ subtly in the battle damage and trim. The lower edging provides distinctly different decorations, pieces of wolf pelt, skulls and runes abound, as well as raised strips engraved with clearly legible runes depicting 'lupus' and 'mortis'. Each time one looks at the pieces closely, even more detail not previously noticed adds to the 'wow' factor. The right shoulder pads are all identical with the classic Terminator icon embossed on, again in very fine detail.
And the competition..? The old metal Space Wolf Terminators are still available, although not in a set anymore it seems, and a squad of these would cost £25 off the shelf.
Positive: Great sculpture with superfine details, Space Wolves terminators brought up to date by blending with the new plastics superbly.
Negative: Slightly sub-par production quality which leaves bubbles that need to be filled and sinking on the feed from the sprue. Certainly for the more experienced modeler to get the best results, requiring more than just a quick clean up of mould lines which is disappointing.
Value: In terms of the sculpture quality and detail the conversion set is good value, however the production quality drags this down to merely reasonable when considering how much work must be done to make the best presentation that these figures certainly deserve. Also bear in mind that a complete plastic terminator box set must also be purchased, and on checking as I wrote this review that has increased to £25 from £20 in the past few weeks (25% at the drop of a hat!), making the overall cost a whopping £40. It also leaves over half the original plastic box set un-used, but as the legs and arms are on different sprues, they can't be purchased separately to save cost.
