Depending on who you believe, Kev White of Hasslefree Miniatures is either a strapping 6 footer with a mane of golden hair or a slightly shorter bloke who can't even reach the top shelves in his workshop. Either way, one thing that's not in doubt is that Kev is one of Britain's finest figure sculptors.
There may be a clue in the fact that Kev likes nothing better than to sculpt dwarves! Indeed, since launching Hasslefree, they've made up a huge chunk of all the figures produced by the company. Kev's dwarves are called Grymn - perhaps after their grim persona. Unlike traditional swords and sorcery dwarves, however, these dwarves are armed with all manner of futuristic weaponry.
This pack contains 5 figures (click the thumbnail above to see more pics). All five are depicted wearing a form of semi-armoured space suit and full face helmets. One figure - clearly the leader - is modelled with his visor raised, showering his glowering face! All 5 are armed with the same weapon which could pass for a chunky, futuristic version of an SMG. One nice touch is that the guns look slightly too big which only serves to emphasize the fact that these characters are dwarves.
As with all of Kev's work, the sculpting is typically neat and crisp throughout. Also, although each figure is nicely detailed, they are not so overburdened with folds and creases that you'll go cross-eyed at the prospect of painting them. That said, if you're a brush jockey, these miniatures will provide you with plenty of scope for flexing your bristles. The armour has lots of raised plates and nice clean edges which should help ensure your "shade and hi-light" technique gets a full workout.
Positive: Very clean sculpts. Solid, well-balanced poses. Nice guns!
Negative: Despite the undoubted quality of the contents, the pack is a bit expensive.
NB: Whilst some people may not thank me for saying this I feel it only fair to point out that if you're a 40k gamer and fancy giving the old Squats a bit of a run out, these are perfect. There is a whole range available and they all look very tasty.
