"Chrimbo is coming, my moose is getting fat. Please put a conker in my old rain mac!" Or some such thing. I never could remember Christmas carols. The fact is, Chrimbo is just around the corner (or it was when I wrote this. In today's consumer driven climate Chrimbo is hiding behind just about every corner anyway!) and little Johnny wants a present. What are you going to do about it? Here's a thought, why not buy him a "how to paint video"!

"Model Paint - Acrylic (First Steps)" is produced by the Melusina Production Company. If you don't recognise the name - join the queue! That's because Melusina are a Film company who have - until now - steered well clear of the world of model making. The owner of the company is Clive Ward who, in his spare time, is a keen modeller an figure painter. The notion that he could combine both his work and his hobby didn't occur to Clive until recently when Melusina were asked to shoot a "How to Paint" video for an art supplies company. The format worked well and Clive decided he could use this medium to produce a video for model makers. The only question that remained was who could he cast in the leading role of presenter and painting guru. Thankfully, with his network of connections, Clive knew just the man.

Himself.

Throughout the course of the video - which is a whopping 59 minutes long - Clive dons the costumes and guises of several different characters. As he demonstrates how to paint a Lord of the Rings Elf - for example - he becomes the monkish Oscor Foxtrot. Similarly, when tackling a 1/76th scale plastic Napoleonic figure, he is Sergeant 'Arry Kitcher, complete with steel helmet and an equally 'ARD ATTITUDE! His third and final character, builder Terry Wain, shows how to prepare the models and create a scenic base for them to fight upon.

Whilst Clive is no Anthony Hopkins, his pantomime-like personas certainly add a humorous and light-hearted dimension to the proceedings. As I've mentioned already, the video demonstrates a range of simple techniques for figure painting with acrylics. This encompasses cleaning the figures and removing any flash, undercoating and basic paint finishes. There are even a few snippets of information about ink washes and dry-brushing. All the while, Clive's colourful antics keeps the interest flowing with little quips and comments - most of which are highly rel event to the proceedings! There's also plenty of black humour such as the time when se argent 'Arry reminds viewers not to cut off their fingers with the hobby knife. In fact what Clive manages to do - perhaps more so than anything else - is make the whole business of model making good jolly good fun!

By this stage you've probably guessed that this video is aimed at the younger end of the market. To be fair, there is no indication of this on the packaging. In my opinion, however, if you know a youngster who has just started to develop an interest in Dwarf flesh then this would provide a perfect introduction to the hobby. If, on the other hand, your spotty nephew has discovered the allure of an altogether different kind of flesh, then this is not for them. These days, by the age of 14 or 15, many avid figure painters have already developed their own competition winning styles and techniques which are quite beyond the scope of this video.

Ultimately, this is good honest stuff without pretense or delusions of grandeur. The preparation guides, safety tips and painting techniques are simple and easy to follow and will provide first-time figure painters with some valuable information - plus a few laughs into the bargain!

A good stocking filler.
