Great North Roads are starting to get a well-deserved reputation for producing first-rate scenic bases. The French Street Diorama setting is a perfect example. The model comes packaged in a box which is only marginally smaller than a standard VCR. This may have something to do with the fact that the contents weigh about the same as a sack of potatoes. The entire model is cast in dense, hi-grade plaster - a material which some observers often refer to as "ceramic". Although this piece may have little in common with fine bone China, it remains a fine example of craftsmanship for many other reasons.
The slab-like base of the diorama measures almost 13" wide x 9" in length. It's also a whopping 1" thick - and even deeper in some places. The base features a detailed cobbled street which runs diagonally across the surface from one edge to the other. This is flanked on both sides by a raised pavement and adjoining curb. The area on top of and around the street is strewn with bricks, military debris and other rubble.
The rest of the model is very easy to assemble. It comes complete with a number of additional building sections which slot into grooves in the base. The largest piece is an imposing two-story building fascia which bisects the scene from one edge to the other. This is supported by tall half-ruined brick buttress, complete with bullet-ridden plaster. On the other side of the street is a low L-shaped wall complete with corner pillar and cap.
The level of detail is very good throughout. Features such as the paving slabs and planking are well defined with nice sharp edges. The building fascia and brickwork - in particular - is very nicely done. What's more, because of its large size, this base will comfortably accommodate even the biggest period AFVs and perhaps a bit more besides.
This is another great piece of kit from GNR and one I am more than happy to recommend to model-makers no-matter what their level of expertise.
