I must confess this is the first time I've ever encountered a so-called "ceramic" model. What's more, although there are almost 40 different kits in the Great North Roads range, the Back Street Diorama Base is one of the heaviest, weighing-in at a handsome 2.2 kilos!! I fear I may be starting at the deep end.

Not surprisingly, the kit comes in a large heavy duty, cardboard box. On closer inspection I also discover the contents are neatly packaged in bubble wrap. There are 6 pieces in all, including the large diorama base and main building fascia - as well as three smaller side sections of ruined wall. There is also an additional shop front piece made of resin.

Each of the individual castings is in pristine condition and incredibly clean. There are no mould marks, flash, air bubbles or other artifacts of any description. This means the kit can be assembled straight out of the box with hardly any preparation what so ever. I'm also reliably informed that - because of the density of the plaster - the pieces are largely non-porous, so do not require sealing.

As a newcomer to ceramics I was both surprised and delighted to discover that each section is covered in fine details. There are nice sharp edges on the brick work and sills as well as deep, clearly defined gaps between woodwork cobbles and paving.

This model has certainly seen off any reservations I may have harboured about plaster. It is a far more robust and rewarding material than I had ever imagined. The diorama base alone measures 12"x9" and is .5 of an inch thick! When rapped with a knuckle it produces a most satisfying "dong" not unlike the sound made by a large dinner plate! The pieces butt together in next to no time leaving you with a finished model that is already a pleasure to look at - even before you reach for your airbrush.

Conclusion: This is a terrific diorama base and well worth a look!
