Once you've collected your first wargaming army, your mind will no-doubt turn to the subject of scenery. Without scenery, any games you play will be entirely 2 dimensional. In general terms, there are two distinct types of scenery on the market, natural and man-made. The natural or "green" stuff are the hills, rivers and woods, around which your troops will do battle. The man made scenery includes walls, roads, barricades and all manner of buildings. This kind of scenery is designed to break-up the terrain as well as providing the opposing forces with cover and strategic strong points.
Man made scenery comes in all shapes and sizes. Pretty much anything can be used to form a linear obstacle and most companies have explored the gamut of possibilities. Even so, there is one piece of man-made terrain which is probably more popular than all the other forms put together. That is the humble sand bag. Such defences has been an ever present feature of the gaming world for ages and you can buy them in every every scale and dimension you can think of. The only question you need to answer - is which one shall I buy first?
When Jeff Nall of Battle Works Studios considered this problem, he came to a very simple conclusion. Instead of releasing umpteen individual sandbagged defences - I'll make an entire collection and sell them in one big box! The "28mm Sand Bag Set 1" is the result. It contains no less than 12 sand bag sections - in a feast of different configurations. There are straight pieces, curves, corners, sections reinforced with oil drums and almost every other conceivable variation on the same theme. The set also contains 12 small crates and 2 crate stacks.
Each piece is cast in a pure white resin. This material is very light. It also appears to be a very fine material which is perhaps why the level of detail is so good. I did encounter a few air bubbles and casting artifacts - but nothing major and certainly nothing that detracted from the overall appearance.
There are a couple of things I really like about these castings. The first is that the individual sand bags have been sculpted with an eye for the real thing. All too often, sand bagged defences look like formations of bricks - albeit with rounded edges - that look stiff an unconvincing. These castings are different. The sand bags droop and flop quite naturally. I also like the fact that the base of the defences (on which the sand bags are layered) is almost non-existent. This means that miniatures can be positioned almost touching the sand bags - without them appearing to be stood on a step.
At only $24.00US this set represents excellent value for money. If you are looking for some new terrain and obstacles, this set will not fail to please!
