Over the last couple of years Geoff Nall has been making lots of friends! He runs a small, independent company called Battle Works Studios who produce wargaming terrain. To date his range consists chiefly of military ruins, fortifications and trenches in 28mm scale. This makes it ideal for many different types of gaming scenarios - from the battlefields of WWI to futuristic Sci-fi worlds.
About a year ago Geoff introduced a new line of medieval style buildings. These are known collectively as the "HG Walls" range. The line is aimed at dark age fantasy wargamers and role players. The Merchant's House is just one of 12 similar 28mm buildings in the range which also includes barns, shops, townhouses and even a church.
The building measures 14cm x 10cm at its widest points and stands approx. 14cm tall to the top of the chimney. It's cast in a fine white resin which is indicative of the entire battle Works range. This gives the structure a dull, matte finish - quite unlike most other poured resin castings. It also seems to produce excellent, crisp surface detail.
The house is modelled along the lines of a classical Elizabethan style timber frame building. It features rendered plaster walls between exposed wooden beams and struts. The entire structure is capped by a very tidy tiled roof. The attention to detail is excellent, from the fine grain and nail holes in the timbers - to the close tracery of the leaded windows. Indeed the quality of the relief detail is so good that it simply begs to be painted. Exponents of drybrush techniques, in particular, could have this building prepped and ready for the battlefield in no time. Equally, those who prefer a more measured approach will undoubtedly find plenty of character to draw out with a brush.
Perhaps the best thing you can say about this building - and others in the range - is that it looks "genuine". Whilst there may be other similar structures on the market, many are simply boxes with applique detail bolted on to the exposed surfaces. This building, on the other hand, looks like it was built from the inside out which lends it a certain architectural authenticity.
As well as being an excellent model, this is also a pretty good casting! There are a few minor air bubbles here and there - but nothing that detracts from the overall quality of the piece. It's also worth noting that even thought the entire building is cast in one big lump, there is hardly any warping or sag in the walls. Every surface and every edge appears to be as straight as a die.
I really like this building and would not hesitate to recommend it to wargamers and/or small scale diorama builders. It's perfect for Warhammer, Middle Earth or just Ye Olde London Town! At $35US it also represents pretty good value - especially compared to other products on the market.
Well worth a look.
