The "Wald mit Geroll" (Forest with Rubble) is one of the smallest pieces in the Gelaendestuecke range of 1:72nd scale scenery. It is supplied as a small kit comprising of a base and 3 individual model pine trees. The base is egg shaped and measures approximately 19cm x 15cm and is a mere 6mm high. Positioned off-centre near the middle of the base is single casting of a wrecked cart which appears half buried in the surrounding terrain. Around the wreckage are 3 plastic tree stumps. These are the fixtures into which the accompanying trees are "plugged" when assembling the kit.
The entire base has been painted in a deep earthy brown colour - which has been hi-lighted in a lighter shade of the same tone. The base has then been covered with a liberal covering of static grass, leaving only a few bare sections of earth showing through. The effect is visually very pleasing. This is further enhanced by applications of lichen, long grass and a dark yellow straw-like material which have been glued at strategic positions around the base.
Once assembled the piece is very attractive and certainly sturdy enough to withstand the rigours of the tabletop. The only downside is that the person who made my base was a bit heavy-handed with the glue. One big blob was used to secure some of the scenic material and (although it is largely transparent) it does look unsightly upon closer inspection. Maybe I'm just being picky! The fact is if this one piece is a good indication of the rest of the range, I heartily recommend you start compiling your order ASAP!
NB: It's also worth making a mental note of the fact that when my order arrived from Germany, I found it securly wrapped in some of the best packaging I have ever seen. I applaud Gelaen for taking such careful steps to address what is often a neglected aspect of the mail-order service upon which many of us rely.
